When I started Yung Skincare, I wasn’t just obsessing over formulas that make your skin look like it drinks green juice and meditates daily. I was also dead-set on creating packaging that wouldn’t end up as some sad piece of plastic floating in the ocean, giving turtles trust issues. Enter: glass jars with aluminum lids.
If you’re thinking, “Okay, cool, but why does that matter?” let me break it down. Aluminum is the Beyoncé of recycling—it’s the most recycled material in the world, with nearly 75% of all aluminum ever produced still in use today. Glass, on the other hand, is the low-key hero. It doesn’t break down into microplastics or end up choking the planet—it either fully recycles or breaks down naturally over time. In short, these materials don’t ghost the Earth; they show up and do their part.
Here’s where things get juicy. During the early days of Yung, I had plenty of people telling me to just go with plastic. “It’s cheaper, easier, and nobody cares,” they said. But, like, I care. Plastic? Hard pass.
This decision delayed our launch. A lot. And by “a lot,” I mean months of late-night Googling, endless supplier calls, and questioning if I’d gone full stubborn. Spoiler: I had. I refused to compromise. Sure, I could’ve given in and wrapped our gorgeous formula in a plastic jar, but every time I thought about it, my inner Greta Thunberg was like, “How dare you?”
Here’s the thing: I get it. Plastic is everywhere. It’s easy, it’s cheap, and it’s what most brands default to. But at Yung, we believe skincare should be better—not just for you but for the planet. And that’s why we went with glass and aluminum.
It’s not just about looking like an eco-friendly brand; it’s about actually being one. When you’re done with your Yung jar, you can recycle it, repurpose it, or turn it into a cute little plant holder (succulents, anyone?). Either way, it’s not ending up in a landfill.
Choosing sustainable packaging wasn’t easy, and it sure as hell wasn’t cheap. But it was right. So, when you use Yung Skincare, you’re not just taking care of your skin; you’re joining a movement to take care of the planet, too.
Here’s to fewer plastics, better skincare, and all of us being the main character in our sustainability era.
Cheers!
